Youth and cadets

Youth and cadets: learn for less

$1,000 toward launches and glider rental: a $500 Soaring Association of Canada bursary, matched by $500 from the club.

With the $15 youth membership, a glider licence can cost very little. Ask us and we'll help you apply.

The bursary is open to sAC members under 21, or full-time students under 25, as of January 1. Availability is set by the Soaring Association of Canada each year, with up to 5 bursaries per club. SAC Youth Bursary Program

For parents

  • All flying before solo is dual, with a certified instructor as pilot-in-command.
  • Training can start at any age. Students need to reach the controls comfortably (roughly 5 ft tall) and be ready to learn (typically 12 and up).
  • Solo is possible from age 14, once the instructor is satisfied the student is ready.
  • A full Glider Pilot Licence can be held from age 16.
  • Carpooling is often available from Saskatoon, Martensville and Warman.

Air Cadets

Air Cadets who earn their Glider Pilot Licence here can also do a Soaring Pilot Conversion for their cadet wings.

What it costs

  • $15 youth and Air Cadet membership a year, for members under 19
  • $5 a winch launch
  • $0.50 a minute of glider time
  • Free instruction

The path

The same five steps as every student: flight lessons, medical, ground school and the GLIDE exam, first solo and licence.

Most students go solo after around 40 instructional flights. With previous aviation experience or a pilot licence, it can be as few as 10 to 20.
